Couch2Summit was born out of the desire to inspire people to take up the challenge of tackling some of our great mountains.
Mountains are one of nature's greatest marvels. They stand there towering in front of you, mighty and formidable with their immense faces of rock, snow and ice.
But within those narrow ridge lines and steep faces, they are also one of nature's great teachers, providing invaluable lessons on how to tackle the mountains and challenges of everyday life. From their lofty positions, they remind us to see the bigger picture that we so often struggle to see when we drown in our day to day problems and struggles at the bottom. They also provide one of the best ways to engage with the raw beauty and might of our planet.
Mountains offer stern physical and mental tests for people wanting to conquer them. Most of their teaching comes from the journey itself. Tests and lessons on fitness, skills, perserverance, commitment, knowing when to let go and choosing your battles wisely.
Ultimately, they will reward those who pass those tests with some of the most astounding views at their summits and even if they dont surrender their summits on the day, the journeys on them are amongst the most rewarding experiences we can all have in our lives.
Couch2Summit's goal is to get people started on that journey of tackling their first mountains. To have enjoyable and safe adventures on the hills, a focus on fitness is a key first step. You could slog your way up yes but that wouldn't be an enjoyable experience. By focussing on training that improves your aerobic endurance and strength, you start building the fitness base that sets your body up for long days on the hills (and maybe for that next marathon you wanted to run!).
Beyond the fitness, you will also need experienced Mountain Guides who will teach you the required skills and help you get up and down the mountains safely in varying weather conditions.
